Digital Nomad Visa in Slovenia: Residence Permit for Remote Work
What Is a Digital Nomad in Slovenia?
- Is employed by, or works under a civil/contractor agreement for, a company based outside Slovenia, or
- Is self-employed outside Slovenia and provides services remotely using ICT, without taking up employment in Slovenia.
Key Requirements and Programme Restrictions
- Validity: the permit is issued for up to 12 months.
- Extension: not extendable; a new application as a digital nomad may be possible after a waiting period (commonly used approach: reapply after the previous permit ends—confirm exact timing in your case).
- Switching to another basis: during the permit period, it may be possible to change the purpose of stay (e.g., move to another residence permit category) without waiting for expiry—subject to eligibility and authority practice.
- Local employment is not allowed: the core concept is remote work for the international market, not employment in Slovenia.
Financial requirement
What the Slovenia Digital Nomad residence permit gives you?
- Legal residence in Slovenia for up to 12 months while working remotely;
- Schengen travel under the general rules applicable to residence permit holders;
- Immediate family reunification (a key feature of this status), without waiting for a minimum period of residence in Slovenia.
Where to submit the application?
- At a Slovenian consulate/embassy abroad, or
- If you are legally staying in Slovenia, at an administrative unit (upravna enota).
Documents (typical set)
- Proof of remote work / contracts with a foreign company or evidence of self-employment abroad;
- Proof of income/funds meeting the “2×” threshold;
Valid passport; - Police clearance certificate (typically with legalization/translation as required);
- Health insurance covering the period of stay.
Pros and cons for the applicant
Pros
- A legal Digital Nomad route to Slovenia without opening a business or taking up employment with a Slovenian company;
- Family relocation is possible immediately (family reunification can be filed right away);
- You can use the 12 months as an adaptation period and, if needed, switch to another residence basis later.
Cons
- The permit is issued for 1 year and is not extendable (there is a 6-month “cooling-off” period before reapplying under the same route);
- You cannot work for the Slovenian labour market (contracts and clients must be structured correctly to remain outside local employment).

I spent a long time researching relocation options in Europe and found LegalToMove. The team was professional and supportive, and the process moved faster than I expected. During the consultation, everything was explained clearly, and after we started working together they stayed involved and patiently answered all my questions. Thank you for your support and great work!

I contacted LegalToMove for help with a Slovenia residence permit and I’m very happy I did. I hesitated for a long time—moving as a single parent with children can be challenging, and my case wasn’t straightforward. The team did an excellent job. The timeline shifted slightly due to public holidays in Slovenia and a short delay in issuing the card, but they stayed in touch throughout and resolved every question quickly. Thank you for your work and support!

Valy
I first learned about the company when I was already in Slovenia as a student. The agency I used before made mistakes in the paperwork, and I ran into a problem that no one could solve. I found LegalToMove through a referral, and they handled the situation—even after long discussions with the local administrative office. They know local rules and procedures well and can resolve cases that seem like dead ends. Thank you.

Egor
Everything was handled remotely and efficiently. They helped set up the company and submit my director appointment quickly. Many people told me it wasn’t possible, so I didn’t expect this level of support. Great experience—moving forward, I’ll work only with you.
Oleg
I was accepted to a university in Slovenia, but I faced an issue with my residence card process. I contacted LegalToMove and everything was resolved much faster than I expected—the card was issued via the embassy in about 1.5 months. Thank you!
