Digital Nomad Residence Permit in Slovenia: Requirements, Duration, and Limitations
As of November 21, 2025, Slovenia offers a separate type of temporary residence permit for digital nomads. It is intended for citizens of third countries (non-EU/EEA) who work remotely for a foreign employer/clients and do not enter the Slovenian labor market.

Who Can Obtain a Digital Nomad Residence Permit?
According to the law, the permit can be obtained by foreigners who:
-
Are not citizens of the EU/EEA;
-
Work remotely:
-
Under an employment contract or civil-law contract for a company outside Slovenia, or
-
Are self-employed abroad and perform their work remotely using ICT;
-
-
Do not enter the Slovenian labor market (do not work for a Slovenian employer/client within the local market).
Key Requirements (What Is Checked During Application)
1. Income (Financial Sufficiency)
Key condition: The applicant must have sufficient funds for living expenses in an amount not less than twice the average monthly net salary in Slovenia, as last published in the Uradni list RS (Official Gazette).
-
In practice, this means:
-
The threshold changes over time (depends on the latest official publication);
-
It is more accurate to calculate and apply based on the current publication at the time of submission.
-
2. Passport
The passport must be valid for at least 3 months longer than the intended stay.
3. Health Insurance
Must have insurance covering at least emergency medical assistance in Slovenia.
4. No Grounds for Refusal
The permit will not be issued if there are grounds for refusal stipulated by law (including those related to security/public order, etc.).
Where and How to Apply
The application can be submitted:
-
At a Slovenian consulate/embassy abroad, or
-
At an administrative unit (Upravna enota) in Slovenia, if you are already legally residing in the country (e.g., on a Schengen visa/within the permitted stay) and apply before the expiry of the allowable stay period.
-
When applying in Slovenia before the permitted stay expires, the authority issues a submission confirmation, which acts as a temporary residence permit until the final decision.
-
Validity Period and Limitations
Duration
The permit is issued for up to 1 year:
-
For the duration of the contract (employment or civil-law), but not more than one year;
-
For self-employed individuals — typically for 1 year (or for a shorter period if the intended stay is shorter).
Extension
It cannot be extended. You can reapply for the same type of residence permit only after 6 months from the expiry of the previous one.
Change of Basis
If you decide to stay in Slovenia for another reason (e.g., employment in Slovenia), the law allows you to apply for another type of residence permit during the validity of the “digital nomad” permit.
Digital Nomad’s Family
A key feature of this regime: Family reunification is possible immediately, without the standard restrictions regarding the applicant’s duration of residence in Slovenia or the length of their permit.
If you need support specifically for a family application (finances for family members, documents, submission), use: Assistance with Digital Nomad in Slovenia.
Commonly Required Documents (Practical Checklist)
The exact list may vary depending on the situation and place of submission, but typically prepare:
-
Proof of remote employment (employment contract / civil-law contract / proof of collaboration);
-
Proof of income/funds (to meet the 2x average net salary threshold);
-
Passport (with sufficient validity);
-
Health insurance with emergency coverage;
-
Proof of legal stay (if applying in Slovenia);
-
Additional confirmations upon the authority’s request (translations, legalization, clarifications regarding employment/income source).
